General Info
Dress Code |
Locker Usage |
At Mount Saint Joseph there are 2 dress codes:
First and fourth quarters For the first and fourth quarters of the school year you will be wearing a MSJ polo shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes. You must purchase the polo shirts from the MSJ school store. You have a choice for the color of the shirt: white, dark purple, grey, navy blue and black. Second and third quarters For the second and third quarters you will need to wear a solid color button down shirt (any color) and a tie. You can wear a tan, black, navy or grey quarter zip sweater as well. You can chose to wear the button down shirt and tie in any quarter, but most people choose the polo shirts for comfort during the first and fourth quarters. Pants must be dress or khaki style and can be in a variety of colors: khaki brown, grey, navy or black. You are required to wear a leather belt or you can purchase an MSJ belt from the school store. Shoes will stay the same throughout the whole year. They must be dress shoes or Sperry like shoes. When it is cold out, you can wear a jacket since you have to walk between the buildings to get from class to class. Just be aware that many teachers do not let you wear a jacket in the classroom so it will have to be placed on the back of your chair. This dress code at MSJ allows for a lot of choices. Everyone looks nice, but different, while walking around campus. You will need a blazer (usually navy blue) for certain events at school. If you are in the choir, and there is a mass in the gym, you will need to wear the blazer. Certain events where MSJ hosts incoming students, the current MSJ students who volunteer at the event have to wear a blazer. Insider tip: There is a closet at MSJ with extra clothes that you can borrow in an emergency so that you can keep within the dress code. Contact Mr. Hoffman or Mr. McDivitt for more details. SportsFall sports are a great way for incoming freshmen to meet new and fellow classmates. There are many sports offered in the fall such as: soccer, cross country, and volleyball (You can see the whole list on the MSJ website). Sports are also a great way to develop student-teacher relationships since many of the teams are coached by teachers. Developing student teacher relationships will be be very useful throughout your time at MSJ. Most of our sports teams do very well. For example, our Varsity football team, JV and varsity basketball and other sports all recently won their divisions.

At Mount Saint Joseph lockers are used in many ways. Some people go to their lockers between classes to get books for their next class and other people go to their locker once a day to swap things out or put stuff in there so they can pick it up at the end of the day. Some people only use their locker for long time storage. For example, if you have a book that you will not need until the next semester, you can store it in your locker until it will be needed. Because our campus is spread out between many buildings, most people don't find it convenient to go to a locker often. Most books are now online or the teacher has copies in the classroom, so your backpack is not too heavy and you don't really need to use a locker. You do have a locker in the Smith Center for PE, but it is only for that class period. So, you will have to carry your PE uniform around in your backpack, or keep it in your main locker. If you are on a sports team such as soccer, wrestling, basketball or lacrosse, you will be assigned a locker for the season to store your equipment. The locks for your lockers MUST be purchased at the school store.
ClubsMSJ offers many clubs that are very active and a lot of fun. There are clubs that are very active and meet on a weekly basis, and others that don't meet as often. An example of a club that is not so active is Leadership club. This club helps out at events like the open house or doing interviews for incoming freshman. An example of an active club is the Robotics club which meets more than once a week and has frequent competitions.
iPads
Each student at MSJ will receive a school issued iPad complete with case and keyboard during the first week of school which is to be used for school work only. Many of your textbooks will be on the iPad. You can not add your own apps to the iPad so be prepared to only use it for school stuff. The school will assign you passwords and will push new apps as needed.
Volunteering
Freshman year, in your Theology class, you will go in small groups and volunteer downtown to serve food at a shelter for homeless people (Our Daily Bread). You will also have to make a casserole (MSJ provides the recipe) the night before and bring it to school frozen to be served at Our Daily Bread. You will go out of uniform to school the day you volunteer and ride a bus to downtown Baltimore. Each student is assigned a job for a few hours. There is a time for reflection after volunteering at the homeless shelter. You then return to MSJ before the end of the school day. This satisfies your volunteer hours for freshman year at MSJ, also know as the Freshman Retreat.
